Premiere: Hedy Blaazer Reveals New EP ‘Holiday Stays’
Sydney-based singer-songwriter Hedy Blaazer is set to officially release her new EP Holiday Stays tomorrow, but we’re super stoked to premiere the record ahead of its release. Known for her honest lyricism and genre-bending folk sound, Blaazer’s latest project is her most personal and socially conscious work yet.
Speaking about the release, Blaazer explains the EP’s central themes:
“I wrote this whole EP about loneliness and alienation. The title track, Holiday Stays, was the first song I wrote. Its about the only time I’ve ever hitch-hiked in my life when I ran out of petrol in the Northern Rivers. The lovely woman who picked me up told me a really sad story about how her life had essentially been ruined by climate change and property investors with airbnbs. It inspired me to write this song as a bit of a call to arms to get things moving in a different way. The other two tracks are also about reflecting on symptoms of the world we live in. Hedge Your Bets is about the gentle way that loneliness creeps up. It’s about some people I’ve met whose lives have turned into a sea of distant friends, sleep-ins and losing your days in a bottle of wine. Better World is reflecting on myself and what I don’t want to be. It’s about how power corrupts and questioning how values often fall away with ambition.”
“I took these songs to my mate Ashleigh Hazel in a very acoustic form, and they added all the production you can hear on the EP. I also had the pleasure of some friends Marcella Tonini (who plays in my live band) on fiddle, and Strawberry Prince and Irene Zhong joining on backing vocals for some tracks. It’s a bit of a different sound than what I’ve done previously, but I’m pretty stoked with how we’ve kept my folk sound while also adding some different elements.”
Produced by Ashleigh Hazel, the EP adds fresh textures to Blaazer’s folk roots. With contributions from Marcella Toninion fiddle and Strawberry Prince and Irene Zhong on backing vocals, Holiday Stays captures both intimacy and expansiveness, cementing Blaazer as one of Australia’s most compelling indie-folk voices.
