PREMIERE: Otious Drop Seriously Smooth “Afterglow”

Otious

Melbourne quartet Otious have followed up their highly acclaimed debut EP with their latest single Afterglow, a super smooth, sombre electronic offering that’ll cause your limbs to involuntarily groove.

Afterglow covers similar sonic territory to recent Aussie electronic boomers Vallis Alps, but with slightly more industrial sounding percussive production. Brooding synthesisers build the perfect platform for Jordan Walker’s commanding vocals to soar, conveying cryptically emotive lyrics with dynamic precision.

There’s something effortlessly cool and slightly seductive about the way Walker croons, “You go insane, my supernova/nova”, and it’s the hook that’ll keep you coming back to this track again and again.

The second verse sees the industrial shimmering and clattering of hi-hats and cymbals take the lead in the minimalistic synth production, while Walker’s growing harmonies perfectly build to the song’s heavy synth climax.

The new single carries on Otious’ smooth electro sounds heard their 2015 debut EP ‘The Charade’, which saw the quartet experiment with dance elements on Self Loathed and the Chet Faker-esque All I Know.

Describing themselves as “four very different fellas trying to make music”, the lads have served up a great taster for their upcoming sophomore EP ‘Afterglow’, which will hopefully see them tour interstate!

Catch them launch Afterglow at Revolver Bandroom in Melbourne this Friday, see below for event info and the single’s soundcloud link.
