Retiree Are Still Working Hard With Latest Single “Continental”

retiree

Following the release of their 2013 EP ‘Retiree’ and 2015 effort ‘This Place’, electronic trio Retiree did the only natural thing and spent a stint locked in an east coast beach house, emerging with their first 2016 release Continental. Packing warm melodies and complex rhythms, the track showcases a band in development without losing the style Retiree fans have come to love.

With its instantly dramatic instrumentation, Continental could easily pass for an action movie soundtrack. Frontman Tori Holleman’s voice is soft and intriguing through the first lines, creating an eccentric, Bowie-esque feel combined with the brooding rock edge of City Calm Down. The chorus launches into thick vocal harmonies and fluttering percussion, taking on an adventurous texture to match the strength and conviction of the vocals. The constant energy of busy rhythms and natural flow between verse and chorus almost steal the show, but Holleman refuses to be out done, delivering a sensitive, enigmatic performance throughout.

Despite the coincidental timing of the release, Retiree are quick to assure that Continental has nothing to do with brexit. “It is about selfie sticks, love, photo albums and tourism,” the band said. “Continental features a field recording of water lapping in a Venice canal. The song was written in a Venice hotel room, recorded in Berlin and Sydney, and mixed and mastered in Melbourne.”

Retiree are planning an intimate Continental launch party for Melbourne fans with electro-lovers Shouse and Corin on Friday the 29th of October – check out the details and Retiree’s single Continental below!
