Album Review: Pretty City ‘Colorize’

prettycity

Slinging you into a transfixing spiral of psych-rock is the tunnel of sound from Melt, the opening track of Pretty City’s spankin’ new release. The acid-drenched debut album from Pretty City will consume you with the Melbournians’ progressive sound.

“Adding resistant rhythmic breaks, Mary Go Round enlightens a slight Muse-esque, theatrical twist to the album.”

Forming in 2012, the trio pumped out their first gig after just two rehearsals. With determination and three years of relentless gigging, the fuzz-rockers are here with their long-awaited 9-track album. Featuring a versatile collection of hard hitting, infectious tracks that could be straight outta the 90s, the album carries a welcoming nostalgia.

From the mimicking heartbeat rhythm of Melt, ‘Colorize’ rolls out catchy pop melodies and guitar hooks in Running Around. You’ll be moving within seconds as the track dives into the perfect recipe for a modern indie-rock hit. Mary Go Round follows with darker sounds of lower, rumbling guitar. Adding resistant rhythmic breaks, Mary Go Round enlightens a slight Muse-esque, theatrical twist to the album.

Loaded with gritty guitar, Pretty City amp the album with a underlying ferocity. Holding onto a similar vibe, Second Hand Clothes creates a consistent theme as frontman Hugh Matthews growls, “Running the world/I feel like I’m nothing/All of my friends are insane”.

“While maintaining a recognisable style, Pretty City travel through haunting, gritty rock to a lighter psychedelia.”

After a short, dreamy interlude played out on piano and soft guitar, Pretty City unload a reverberated avalanche of guitar and falsetto driven vocals. Fun Machine and Ignoring My Friends lean more on their psychedelic personality, with both tracks presenting swirling guitar, reserved drums, and elongated vocal phrasing.

‘Colorize’ is an impressive umbrella of sound. While maintaining a recognisable style, Pretty City travel through haunting, gritty rock to a lighter psychedelia. ‘Colorize’ will be released Thursday 28th April via Pretty City’s Soundcloud.
