Romanie Unveils Gritty New Single ‘Uh Oh’ and Announces Headline Naarm Show

Alt-indie artist Romanie returns with her powerful new single ‘Uh Oh’, marking a bold sonic shift following the success of her 2023 debut album Are We There Yet?. Based in Naarm/Melbourne and originally from Belgium, Romanie’s latest track delves into raw emotional territory, pairing grunge-tinged guitars with searing vulnerability and a healthy dose of self-aware humour.

Co-produced with Sam Swain (RAT!hammock, Obscura Hail) and written alongside Hamish Mitchell (Armlock), ‘Uh Oh’ explores themes of personal turbulence, health struggles and homesickness — all grounded by Romanie’s signature lyrical honesty. The track builds to a cathartic, fuzzed-out climax that reflects the chaos of the song’s emotional core.

“I was going through a rough patch in life with some health scares and homesickness and caught up with my friend Hamish Mitchell, we wrote ‘Uh Oh’  over a couple of hours. A few months later we started playing it live – it’s a really fun song to play live. This was the first time taking my live band into the studio and I think Sam Swain captured our energy really well. The scream got added towards the end of the session mainly as a joke but everything evolved so naturally and we kept it in.”Romanie.

The accompanying music video, directed by Young Ha Kim and shot in Cranbourne’s car wrecking yards, signals Romanie’s departure from her earlier, shinier indie-pop aesthetic. It’s a visual metaphor for reinvention — gritty, unpolished, and fiercely authentic.

“For the video, I emailed about 20 different car wreckers around Victoria and some of them were not super enthusiastic: one of them got back to me just saying ‘Go get fucked. Sent from my iPhone’. Darren from Harvey Wreckers and Troy from Gary Macs both replied with enthusiastic good news a few days before I was about to abandon the idea, and the locations were so amazing – the whole day I was smiling and giggling amongst the wrecks.”

Following a stellar 2024 national tour, Romanie is set to perform ‘Uh Oh’ live with her full band at an upcoming headline show in Naarm this June. With support from big tastemakers all over and numerous accolades to her name, Romanie continues to cement her place as one of Australia’s most compelling emerging voices.

‘Uh Oh’ is out now.
