Royel Otis Release New Album hickey – A Dreamy Indie Triumph
Australian indie duo Royel Otis have unveiled their much-anticipated sophomore album hickey. The 13-track collection captures the chaos and charm of young love, moving seamlessly between jangly indie rock, shimmering dream-pop and nostalgic new wave tones.
Opening with the ironically titled “i hate this tune,” the record immediately sets the pace with racing rhythms and bittersweet lyricism. From there, hickey explores the highs and lows of affection with a mix of playfulness and vulnerability, showcasing the duo’s knack for writing songs that feel both anthemic and intimate.

One of the album’s standouts, “who’s your boyfriend”, arrives with a stylish music video directed by Lauren Dunn, starring The Summer I Turned Pretty lead Lola Tung. The track blends soaring synths, tumbling drums and sharp guitars, culminating in a hook that feels destined to be shouted back at the band during their upcoming tour. It’s a perfect snapshot of Royel Otis’ ability to marry clever storytelling with irresistible melodies.
The album’s release comes as their single “moody” continues its impressive run atop the Billboard Adult Alternative Airplay chart, while live momentum builds off a string of festival highlights including Outside Lands, Lollapalooza and Fuji Rock. Their viral cover of The Cranberries’ classic Linger—which recently featured in The Summer I Turned Pretty—only further cements their status as one of indie’s breakout acts.
With their “meet me in the car” tour already selling out shows across North America, Australia and Europe, hickey feels like a bold leap forward that positions Royel Otis as a global indie force to watch.
Royel Otis’ new album hickey is available now, everywhere.
