Don’t Mess With Sarah Connor’s Gritty Single “Apex”

Sarah Connor

After establishing herself as one of the local hip-hop scene’s most formidable voices with Kill Bill and Coma State, Sydney hip-hop star Sarah Connor has returned in even stronger form with her latest single Apex.

Featuring Sydney-via-UK rapper Bigredcap alongside Sydney emcee Losty, Apex draws from a melting pot of styles including southern hip-hop, grime, and obviously, Australian hip-hop. Accompanied by a heavy, piano-driven beat, a chilling opening hook declares that the trio are not to be messed with. Connor backs this up with killer wordplay in the first verse, flowing brilliantly throughout the track. Bigredcap’s fast two-time-flow and Losty’s gritty tone don’t go unnoticed either, adding even more icing to the Apex cake.

In only a short time, Connor has really shaken up the hip-hop scene. Last year she received Hilltop Hoods’ $10,000 APRA AMCOS grant, and she has since gone on to support overseas and local hip hop greats Common, Talib Kweli, Dylan Joel, and Thundamentals.

Connor is set to follow up the single with an EP later this year. Boasting collaborations with soul singer Natalie Slade alongside production from Lou Koo, Jaytee Hazard, Jesse Marantz, and ILL 86, this could be one of 2016’s most promising Australian hip-hop releases.
