Scared Sh*tless By Movies Q & A: Jack and The Kids

Bendigo outfit Jack and The Kids haven’t even had a glance backwards since winning triple j’s 2016 Groovin The Moo competition. They’re currently hitting the road around Victoria in support of their latest brooding single Alone, ahead of the release of their sophomore EP in early 2017. We asked Jack Kennedy, Lachy Prest, Braden Geyer, and Jack Ellis which horror movies they hate to love and the inspiration behind their new single!

Do each of you have a favourite horror movie?

Lachy: ‘Wolf Creek’ – This one’s obviously Australia’s greatest ever horror movie…right? It makes you never want to even dream about hitch hiking or pick up one.

Jack K: ‘The Conjuring’ – Hands down the scariest movie to of been made in the last decade. Everything in that movie is what you are scared of as a kid.

Braden: ‘Chuckies Bride’ – Those dolls freak me out, man!! Also like ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’. This would have to be one of best-made horror films in the history of horror films, the storyline, the camera work…it’s just amazing!

Jack E: ‘Scream’ – I watched this movie when I was too young and it still gives me nightmares…also ‘The Ring’ definitely scared me. If there’s one person I can’t bring down, it’s that bloody girl that hops out of the TV, AHHH!!

If you guys were in a horror movie, in which order would you be killed?

The order we would be killed off would be Braden first because he’s the slowest runner out of all of us and would get mowed down easier than a turtle trying to outrun a rabbit. The second member to die would be Jack K as he is the weakest, smallest band member and is just down right scared at his own shadow!

Next would be Lachy, he would be the character where you think is going to survive as he is so innocent but then some stupid happens and he dies.

Lastly, Jack E would be the hero of the movie. Our 6 ft 4’ drummer is the strongest, smartest, and most reliable member in the band.

Which horror movie villain would you prefer to be hunted by?

Lachy: Chucky Doll, because I’m confident I would be able to take him out with no problem at all.

Jack K: The Blair Witch, did old mate Blair even exist?! Pfft…

Braden: Scream, everyone knows that under that white mask is really the nicest guy in the whole world!

Jack E: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre man, if this guy thinks he’s tough, he hasn’t seen me yet!

How would you survive a horror movie, what methods would you use?

Lachy: Not sure, maybe just jump in the car and drive.

Jack K: Just try and find the best god damn hiding spot!!

Braden: Well I wouldn’t try and outrun them, that’s for sure…

Jack E: It wouldn’t matter what weapon they had, a slasher, chainsaw, I’d be able to handle it without a doubt.

For the uninitiated, how would you describe Jack And The Kids sound and live show?

Unlike the movies we have just been discussing, our sound is what we hope would make our listeners feel nostalgic, warm feelings. In terms of our sound it is heavily influenced by bands such as The Jezabels, City Calm Down, Birds of Tokyo…so think guitars with a lot of reverb and delay, ambient synths, and so on!

With us only being a 4-piece, we’re trying really hard to get our live sound as close to what you would hear with our recordings. While this can be challenging, we’re loving our live shows at the moment!

We’re loving your latest single Alone, where did the inspiration for the track come from?

The inspiration from the song came from the feelings that you get when things in life change and sometimes you wish they hadn’t. After a while you look back on what’s happened and realise it’s not the same anymore.

Our vocalist (Jack Kennedy) and guitarist (Braden) grew up together in a suburb on the outskirts of Bendigo and back in the day, it was full of beautiful paddocks and bushland. Today, it is still an amazing place but it’s evolved so much that it’s such a different place to when we were children, so we thought we would write a song about!

Lastly, tell us three things people should know about your upcoming EP?

  1. The EP won’t be out until next year, sorry guys! (still writing, recording)
  2. Alone may or may not be on the EP, we love a surprise.
  3. There might be some guest appearances on the EP!
