Squid The Kid Shares Inspirations Behind New EP, ‘Kozy Tape’
Naarm/Melbourne rising star Squid The Kid today releases his debut EP, KOZY TAPE. Following the singles ‘Moves’ and ‘SPEED’, the KOZY TAPE is full of colour and personality, in true Squid The Kid style. To celebrate the EP, Squid The Kid has shared with us 5 most influential live acts that inspired the different sounds on KOZY TAPE.
Weekend Love – Jafunk
This track set the whole tone for the EP, I guess the funky bass line and crazy synths really spoke to me as I’m already in a similar sort of world to this genre.
Crush – Hutcher
Infuschia (producer) was blasting this song throughout the studio whilst I was making this EP. That then sparked the idea of creating a UKG inspired song, Rnb soul singers like Craig David have gone to create tracks like these, so thought to give myself a challenge and give this genre a crack.
GANG – Kairo Keyz
I was doing my scrolling Tik Tok before bed routine and came across this jazz band playing a drill song, I straight away sent this video to the band to see if we could create a Jazz/Drill inspired song. ‘GANG’ was also making its way down the Tik Tok pipeline and glad it did because I love the laid back flow that Kairo delivers throughout the track.

Blinded By Your Grace Pt 2 – Stormzy
Me and the crew went to Laneway this year which Stormy was headlining, his set was nothing less than a masterpiece, he closed the night out with this song alongside a full blown choir. Growing up going to a Catholic Primary school you’re constantly surrounded by church hymns sung by choirs. When I was writing ‘Seen Zone’ and the opportunity came for me to utilise a choir feel, I had to jump on the opportunity right away.
7 Days – Craig David
A classic rnb track that took the world by storm when it released in the early 2000’s, its real crazy to see this song last the test of time and still be relevant to an extent til this day. The smart word play including all the days of the week, alongside a catchy melodic flow, I found myself going back to this song from time to time during the duration of writing this project.
