Surprise Chef Share Soulful New Single Websites Ahead of Forthcoming Album ‘Superb’

Melbourne’s acclaimed jazz-funk outfit Surprise Chef have released their latest single, Websites, the final preview from their upcoming album Superb, set to drop Friday, May 16.

Where recent singles embraced upbeat grooves and dancefloor-ready funk, Websites invites listeners into a more reflective space. Built around a hypnotic drum machine, the track unfolds with lush layers of vintage keys, minimal percussion, and deep bass textures—delivering a slow-burning soundscape that showcases the band’s dynamic range and genre-blurring artistry.

Guitarist Lachlan Stuckey describes the track as a nostalgic ode to the early internet era, crafted during a late-night creative flow the band calls the “Bone Zone.” The song features unconventional instrumentation—bells, Wurlitzer piano, and mallet percussion—imbuing it with a dreamlike, almost cinematic quality.

“Our heartfelt acknowledgement of the website was recorded deep in the Bone Zone, the delirious state of mind accessed late at night during a recording session. Lights off, we performed this collective prayer in a state of pious solemnity. In concert with analogue drum machine and Wurlitzer electric piano, the recording features a dual-mallet section, with Jethro Curtin and Hudson Whitlock playing the haunted ice cream truck bell and skeleton’s ribcage, respectively. The song is dedicated to our favourite websites.”

Following the release of Superb, Surprise Chef will embark on a national tour, with headline shows at VIVID Sydney, The Night Cat in Melbourne, and Brisbane’s Princess Theatre, before heading to Europe and North America.

Since emerging in 2020, Surprise Chef have built a global following with their signature instrumental sound, earning praise from tastemakers all over the world.

Websites is available now, everywhere.
