Take 5 With BB Sabina
Hot on the heels of March’s ‘Multitude’, Naarm’s own BB Sabina have offered up yet another epic piece of music, this time in the form of new single ‘Beyond’. A jaw-dropping combination of post-rock, shoegaze and alternative sounds weave together to form the basis of singer and songwriter Beth Uhe’s exploration into freedom, personal transformation, and transcendence.
Here on AAA Backstage, Beth takes us through five artists and works that have inspired and informed the new single. From fuzzed-out noise rock to dreamy synth-punk, take a dive into the world of BB Sabina.
Sonic Youth – EVOL
This album is massive for me. Particularly, the magical ‘Shadow of a Doubt’, with Kim Gordon’s dreamy, mysterious and sexy vocals. The cinematic warm sound with all the droney fuzzy guitars and piano textures, and loud-soft dynamics were a big influence on ‘Beyond’.
Suicide – Dream Baby Dream
There is a big nod to this song in the bridge section of ‘Beyond’ – where I repeat “breathe baby breathe” with a very similar delivery to “dream baby dream”. I just love the way that Alan Vega repeats the “dream baby dream” line with such different intonation and character, that you hear the line differently each time. When we play ‘Beyond’ live I sometimes switch the bridge lyrics to “dream baby dream” as a little easter egg – that some super music nerds pick up on.
The Jesus and Mary Chain – Just Like Honey
Such an evocative, delicious track! This song was the main sound reference for the guitar and drum sound for the verse of ‘Beyond’. We kept coming back to this song when working with Aden Senycia who mixed ‘Beyond’ (and did such an amazing job!).

PJ Harvey – The Peel Sessions 1991-2004
Massive inspiration in general as a fearless female artist, particularly her vocal delivery and the rawness and emotion she puts into her music. This album is my favourite of hers because the live recordings really capture this. What more can I say, a legend.
Slomo – Light Pollution
Local Naarm/Melbourne post-punk band Slomo play a killer live show. Seeing Jem play guitar definitely inspired me to crank the distortion more and more often.
