Take 5 with Dirt City
Sydney based Alt Metal outfit Dirt City have just released their blistering new single ‘Scratched’, which premiered exclusively via us just last month. Today Dirt City share with us their 5 favourite tracks of the minute and why.
Such a killer song from a killer band. The way they blend melody and heaviness is just fantastic. The vocals are amazing. This song takes you on an emotional ride and makes you feel so alive. It might remind you of all the struggles you’ve faced, but sometimes you just have to confront it and live through the pain again. – Andrey
Moon Tooth – Awe at all angles
One of my favourite songs. The drums on this track are from another planet; the balance of technicality and musicality is on the top level. The lyrics of this song carry very deep meaning. It is a powerful exploration of self-identity and embracing who we are. It motivates us to step outside societal boundaries, endure the struggles that help us grow, and appreciate every part of ourselves. This song reminds us that we can thrive in every corner of life, like a river rushing with awe-inspiring strength.- Andrey
Lacuna Coil – Sleepless Empire
I can remember listening to their 2nd EP Halflife (I guess half a lifetime ago, 25 years now) and being completely taken by the band. But since the late 2000s Lacuna Coil drifted off my radar. This new album only dropped a few weeks ago and I decided to revisit, see what was new… and wow, it’s been on repeat since. The whole album sounds huge, big grooving riffs and really strong vocals all round. The heavy use of synths and electronic elements is something I’ve been seeking out more lately too, especially since joining Dirt City, and this album has a ton of it. I’ve included the whole album as it’s still the way I prefer to consume music. It’s a very modern sound with their traditional elements still in tact, and it’s a musical journey well worth taking. – Luke

The latest album from Opeth is a big return to what I liked about the band originally, they are painting with all the crayons again; the heavy, the light, the prog weirdness, the concept album, all of it. Even though I think the album should be listened to as a whole, track 4 “§4” is a standout for me (all the tracks are awkwardly titled). It’s a full on prog metal journey, from the opening bass fuelled riff that leads into the opening section where the vocal phrasing plays so well off the guitar riff, creating this interesting interplay. Then we hear from the narrator, adding this creepy otherness before the sickest of grooves. Just when you think you have a handle on what’s going on the song switches gear into the proggiest of prog call and response section with a flute that serves as the start of the big instrumental middle section that just just a cool jam. – Luke
This song has such propulsion, just constantly driving forward. It really gets you going with themes of getting off your ass and doing shit, no giving up no giving in! It has this 80s hair metal vibe but with Devin’s unmistakeable sound. The vibe during the guitar solo sounds like he’s channeling Pantera, with a “let’s go” right before it starts and just the bass and drums accompanying the solo. The title of PowerNerd seems so onbrand for Devin too that it just gives me a smile reading it, can’t wait to see him play this track live. – Luke
