Take 5 With Dopamine

Brisbane-based indie-rock quartet Dopamine have just revealed their wistful new track ‘Turn Your Heart’ – mixed by Steve Kempinch (Wolfmother, Shag Rock, Powderfinger). Today the band share with us their favourite 5 albums of all time.

Ride – Nowhere

This album has been a big influence on us as a band. It’s Ride’s debut and I think they were really young when they did it. It perfectly captures the energy of a young band but combined with some really good song-writing as well. Unfairly, Ride gets roped into the shoegaze thing, which I get because there’s some similar elements. Their string of influences are very different from a lot of those bands though, creating something that’s just as punky as it is dreamy.

The Strokes – Is This It

There’s nothing I can say about this album that hasn’t been said before. Back-to-back: every song is a banger. It’s all about the simplicity of it. It’s just the raw sound of the band and when the songs are good, you don’t need anything more than that.

The Stone Roses – The Stone Roses

Collectively one of our favourite albums. Jangly, funky and performed with confidence and swagger. It’s the perfect melting pot of dance beats and psychedelia. Every song on it is fantastic and it still sounds so fresh.

Wolf Alice – Blue Weekend

This album was on repeat in the car on our drive from Brisbane to Wollongong to play a (very fun) show. It’s got everything from melancholic soft ballads to in-your-face riffage and soaring vocals. The album is so dynamic and explores some really interesting combinations of sounds, the way each song flows into each other makes it a unique experience to listen start to finish.

Primal Scream – Screamadelica

One of the best acid house and rock combinations ever. It goes from Stones-y rock, to straight up house, then to acoustic balladry and then back to house again. It sounds like a bunch of things that shouldn’t work together but they somehow do very well. It is a very unique listen, and the amount of music that it has influenced is just a testament to how good it is. It’s certainly been a big influence on us as of late… I can see us potentially doing an album like this in the future.
