Take 5 With The Martyr

Naarm/Melbourne-based metal band The Last Martyr have just announced their exciting EP and title track off the record, ‘Requiem’ featuring Alt.’s Daniel Cullen-Richards – produced and mixed by Chris Lalic (Windwaker, Days Like These, RinRin). The record ‘Requiem’ will be available for pre-order from Wednesday, September 18. To celebrate the release, the band have shared with us 5 epic tracks they’re loving at the moment.

Songs we’re listening to right now.

Rivals – Worlds Worst Valentine

The track begins with heavy guitars and unhinged vocals which is a combo we can get behind. Rivals write hooks and choruses like no other and have come into their own in the last year, so get set for them to blow up.  Lyrics are sassy and the music tows the line between electronic pop and heavy rock/metal. I keep seeing clips from their live shows on TikTok and want them to come to Australia so bad. This song is empowering, sexy, uneasy and catchy as hell.

Kelsy Karter & The Heroines – Laser To The Heart

Slay my 80s heart dead. This band are as rock n roll as they come bringing a modern twist on the sound made popular by Van Halen, Def Leppard, Bonnie Tyler and Blondie. Expect a big chorus, a kick ass solo and a key change. Aussie front woman Kelsy is my fire sign spirit animal and perfect representation of someone doing their own thing, giving no fucks about what anyone else thinks and it’s super magnetic! Watch the video for this one; there’s all the smokey vinyl, big hair and tattoos you’d hope for.

Amira Elfeky – Remains Of Us

I can’t listen to Amira without completely wanting to pivot the sound of The Last Martyr to melancholy shoegaze. “Why can’t I be cool and moody like this?” I ask myself. She’s probably a full-on industry plant but you can’t deny there’s something mesmerising about every song she writes and ‘Remains Of Us’ is no different.

Rivilin – Watch Me Sink

Speaking of melancholy, Rivilin is an emo rap/nu metal artist from Brisbane, and this is one of his best songs to date. Riv collaborated with us on our song ‘The Nihilist’ and you can see even in the one verse of that track his skill in twisting words and phrases in really creative ways, going deep with lyrics and transitioning seamlessly between rapping and screaming – oh and he’s totally self-produced. It’s giving Linkin Park, it’s giving $UICIDEBOY$ – what’s not to love?

Zehani – Sex Never Dies

Dark, industrial, boundary-pushing and vibey. This electronic track would appeal to goths as much as the sub-genre of people that attend bush doofs. Zehani’s bio says, “her individual spirit and connection to the great Mother is disrupted by the shriek of the modern world,” and I feel that’s something we should take to heart.

The Requiem is available now, everywhere and the full EP is available on September 18.
