Take 5 With Verticoli

Tasmanian three-piece alt-rock outfit, Verticoli recently released their brilliant single, The Fear which we had the joy of premiering. Today we caught up with the bands drummer, Will who has shared with us his five favourite albums of the minute and why.

Close Counters – ‘Soulacoasta II’
The boys from Close Counters harken from Tassie like us, and you’ve got to support your mates! We’ve known these guys for a long time, but their latest album is my favourite thing they’ve released. The boys put in so much effort to their art, whether it’s graphics and artwork, music videos, or their brilliant live shows. We love seeing a Tassie success story from fellas that have grinding hard for it! Their track ‘GET DOWN!’ is a great place to start, I can’t get the hook out of my head.

Osaka Punch – ‘Mixed Ape’
We just supported Osaka Punch for the Hobart leg of their ‘Mixed Ape’ album release tour and had a blast. They pull from such varied genres and influences – jazz, funk, metal, pop – but they bring it all together to make great music with a super unique sound. It’s great seeing bands take big swings with their music and having fun with it. ‘Mixed Ape’ has a lot going on, start with ‘Hall of Shame’ – such a well-crafted song that shows off their talents.

The Go-Betweens – ’16 Lovers Lane’
Obviously not a new band, but I’ve been going back to ’16 Lovers Lane’ recently, which was a bit of blind spot for me in classic Aussie albums. A really cohesive pop album with beautiful songwriting. You can hear their influence in so many artists since. Incredible Aussie act that is still underappreciated!

Hotline TNT – ‘Cartwheel’
Pitchfork reviews can be up their own arse sometimes, but I saw their glowing review of ‘Cartwheel’ and completely agree. Shoegaze but with some heavy-hitting power-pop elements to it. I know nothing about Hotline TNT, but it’s cool to organically find new music that you dig. Feels like that’s harder to do the older you get!

C.O.F.F.I.N – ‘Australia Stops’
C.O.F.F.I.N have been going strong for almost 20 years, and their fifth and latest album rips. All killer, no filler. A great blend of punk and classic rock that doesn’t let up from start to finish.

Verticoli’s latest single, The Fear is available now, everywhere.
