Take 5 With Warwick Smith

Sydney based Pop Punk artist Warwick Smith has just dropped his new single and music video called ‘Semi-Aquatic’, which we premiered just last week. To celebrate the release further, Warwick has shared wish us his 5 favourite tracks of the minute and why.

Hey, I’m Warwick Smith and this is my top 5 favourite songs at the moment, for AAA Backstage. These particular songs are what’s currently inspiring me and what’s influencing my direction as a musician. There’s some not too surprising picks mixed in with a few curveballs so have a listen and enjoy my wacky reasoning.

Scream 2 by RedHook

This song has something in it that just buries itself into your head. RedHook are such an eclectic kind of band and the way they use callbacks to their own discography in this song is such a cool detail. I’m also an avid fan of the Scream movies and I think they nailed writing something that’s both meaningful while also sounding like it’d fit right onto the soundtrack for one of the new films! Also bonus points because they’re Aussie!

Navigating by Twenty One Pilots

Honestly this entire album (Clancy) took its time to grow on me but this song was always the standout. Twenty One Pilots were very influential to me when I was in high school and I feel like this song is a time capsule of that summer, almost careless, energy. Nowadays I throw this on and scream along to it with friends as a means of re-living the simpler times. It’s just a nice vacation of a song.

J.A.R. by Green Day

I am such a huge Green Day fan and I got to this song so late since it’s kind of an obscure B side track that isn’t on any of their big albums. It really connects with me and melodically there’s something so satisfying about it paired with Billie Joe’s iconic vocals. The song, much like Navigating, brings me to a simpler time; especially with its message of living your life while you can.

This Boy by The Beatles

Yeah, this one’s definitely before my time but I’d never write off good music just because it precedes me. This is actually my favourite Beatles song and I can’t quite pinpoint the reason but I always associate this song with Halloween? Regardless it’s such a good reminder of the authenticity and rawness of rock music back in the day and I think that’s always a good thing to be inspired by as a musician of the 2020s.

Who’s That Girl? By Eurythmics, Annie Lennox & Dave Stewart

I’m 90% sure I actually heard this from a Simpsons episode because I’m just that kind of nerd – so my rationale for this is based on Lisa trying a bunch of new personality types when her status as the school’s overachiever gets threatened. It’s a good fit. I keep finding myself singing this even though I only know two lines from the chorus. I think that’s the beauty of 90s music, you only needed to know one or two lines to jam with it. Simplistic, iconic, unforgettable.

Warwick Smith’s new single, Semi-Aquatic is available now, everywhere.
