The Bronx Salsa Up For Mariachi El Bronx Side Shows
It seems LA rockers The Bronx have decided they want a break from the limb-shattering pits and sweaty shoeies that come with a tour with Violent Soho, to perform some side shows as a mariachi band. That’s right…mariachi…that Spanish/Mexican style stuff that people tango to!
Known as Mariachi El Bronx, thE alter ego allows the band to showcase a completely different side of their musical tastes and jam out a plethora of tasty Latin tunes. The boys released their first mariachi album ‘Mariachi El Bronx’ (all of their albums are eponymous) in 2009 to a warm reception, netting an eight-out-of-10 from NME.
You must be wondering why a punk band would create such music? Do they love tacos and burritos? Or were they just drunk on margaritas? “It was something that was a part of us that we didn’t really realise…being from Los Angeles and growing up and surrounded by Mexican culture, it just kind of happened!” said frontman Matt Caughthran.
Will we see this romantic Lucha Libre side come out on the big VOHO stages? Who knows. But you can catch Mariachi El Bronx playing some small shows in Melbourne and Sydney!
