VIDEO SPOTLIGHT: The Winter Gypsy Go Twin Peaks In Lush ‘Took Me By’ Video
Adelaide quintet The Winter Gypsy have released the video for their wintery-slice of indie-pop perfection for their song Took Me By.
The lead single from the band’s debut EP ‘Page 1’ is a gorgeously melancholic song, which fans of The Middle East and The Paper Kites are sure to enjoy. It begins with ambient sounds underneath the picking of an acoustic guitar, with singer Tush Singh’s quivering vocals pulling it all together. The song suddenly changes a gear when drums and electric guitar soundscape takes over, building the song to a crescendo then returning to its quiet, delicate beginning.
The music video shows a group of people gathered by a railway underpass in the forest of Mount Barker, situated in the band’s home state of South Australia. Each person is doing their own task, from one burning a photograph, to another attacking a bedside table with an axe.
As the camera travels slowly along the rails we come closer to a figure with a cloth bag over their head struggling against the ropes tying them to a couch. The rest of the group run through the tunnel behind the couch, while our possible victim is left on their own, still bound.
Singh says the video relates quite closely with the song’s meaning. “I wrote this song about a period of time wherein my mum was battling cancer. I felt helpless because there was nothing I could do to make her better.
“I wanted to portray that thought into having a visual of someone restrained and ‘crying out for help,’ but having everyone run past (me through the tunnel) because there’s nothing they can do to help me,” says Singh.
