Tkay Maidza & George Maple Collab Is A Bit Lame
Tkay Maidza has just dropped her new single Simulation ahead of the highly anticipated release of her debut studio album ‘TKAY’. Written and produced by LK McKay, Australian sweetheart George Maple, and Tkay herself, the tropical dance anthem follows her two previous album singles Tennies and Carry On (ft. Killer Mike).
Simulation is about overcoming complacency as Tkay says, “It’s so common that people get lazy when they feel content because they have partially achieved their goals and are living the way they dreamt about, thus beginning to think it’ll last forever. I have noticed that things constantly change, so when something doesn’t go to plan it’s like cracks in the simulation become visible.”
The summer-time dance track has a lot of potential, but the outdated production sound and repetitive lyrics seem to drag the track down a notch. Although dynamic and danceable, Simulation sounds too much like mainstream pop for the usually cool Aussie hip hop queen.
The highlight of the track is Tkay’s effortlessly cool hook as she showcases her smooth rapping skills, but her rapping is quickly drowned out by the ‘same-as-every-other-dance-track’ chorus. Overall, Simulation is boring, uncharacteristically uncool, and fails to stand out in a sea of predictable summer dance anthems.
Born in Zimbabwe, the now Australian-based rapper rose to fame in 2014 after the release of her EP ‘Switch Tape’. Since then, Tkay Maidza has performed on some pretty big stages including St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival and Splendour in the Grass.
Tkay Maidza’s debut album ‘TKAY’ is set for release on October 28 which she says sounds like the soundtrack of “a high school girl’s life”. Catch her on her national tour or at music festivals Southbound and Field Day. Listen to Simulation below…
