Trust Issues Q & A: Charlie Brand from Promises Ltd
Over the past few months Aussie electronic duo Promises Ltd have been turning heads and making plenty of people dance with single American Eyes and their self-titled debut EP. Made up of Charlie Brand from Miniature Tigers and Jeremy Malvin a.k.a Chrome Sparks, the duo’s project toes the line between underground dance music and modern day alternative with hazey analog productions and bittersweet vocals. We asked Brand some thought-provoking trust questions and what we need to know about the duo’s EP!
If you had to share your Facebook password with two other people who would you share it with?
I never use Facebook, I’d give it to anyone. Go nuts!
If you had to let someone else plan your life for a week, who would it be?
I would let Jeremy plan my life. He’s the smartest person I know and my life might resemble someone who had their sh*t together if he was in charge of it…
Who would you most likely tell your biggest secret to?
I would tell my biggest secret to my brother. He’s the least judgemental person I know and I feel like I could trust him with anything. If he crossed me, I have enough secrets of his…
If you had to give your credit card to someone else for a day who would you give it to?
I would give my credit card to Lori Greiner from the TV show Shark Tank. I feel like she would make some solid investments on my behalf!
Who would you trust to take your identity for 24 hours?
On one end I wouldn’t trust anyone with this but also, what am I even trying to protect? Jeremy would probably make me a better person by the end of the 24 hours.
You decide to get a decent tattoo on your arm, who do you trust to do the design?
My friend Geoff Bohm. He’s one of my favourite artists and I’ve known him for nearly 15 years. He also knows how to tattoo, which is a plus! We’re talking about getting matching Frasier tattoos.
Imagine you’re playing Jennifer Grey in the final scene of ‘Dirty Dancing’, who would you trust to catch you like Patrick Swayze?
I’m 6’3 so probably someone like Shaq.
For the uninitiated, how would you describe Promises Ltd’s sound and live show?
We use a lot of old analogue synths. Musically [it] sounds very futuristic while maintaining a timeless other worldly quality. We haven’t put together or played a live show yet. I saw Chrome Sparks play last night and it gave me lots of ideas for something exciting.
We’re loving your latest single American Eyes, where did the inspiration for the track come from?
It’s about falling in love with someone European, cold, and intense!
Lastly, tell us three things people should know about your self-titled debut EP?
- It took us over a year off-and-on to make.
- Most of it was written with each of us living across the country from each other.
- We mastered it to tape ourselves and used the tape machine as an instrument.
