Waax Unleash Two New Singles And Announce Album

Brisbane force that is Waax have today unveiled not one but two brand new tunes into the world alongside the news of a forthcoming album which is due out August 5th.

The first single, Dangerous is a piano style ballad that is unlike anything the band have released to date. The huge heavy hitting vibe we’ve come to know of Waax is replaced by slow emotional delivery that is nothing short of epic. Co written with Linda Perry of 4 Non Blondes fame (yes the 4 Non Blondes you’re thinking of) it sees frontwoman Maz Devita work her voice in a whole different tone and it’s amazing.  As Maz explains below, working with Perry was of the most defining moments of her career so far.

“The process of writing ‘Dangerous’ was one of the most wild experiences of my life,” she recalls. “I had talked to the (label) team about planning a writing trip over in LA in late 2019, so naturally everyone reached out to anyone they could think of. I don’t know what the universe was doing during that time, but an email found its way to Linda Perry, and she listened to our music. She requested to set up a writing session right away – and I was literally speechless. She told me she saw something in me, like a real darkness in my voice. Next thing I knew I was in an Uber on my way to her studio absolutely shitting myself. She was and still is the most remarkable human being I have ever had to privilege to meet.”

The second single we’re treated with today is Help Me Hell and this one carries a sound that is sure to be much more familiar to Waax fans. Heavy hitting guitar work, smashing drum tones and yes that iconic power voice that we love. This one is going to be a big treat when presented live on stage.

“‘Help Me Hell’ was one of the earlier tracks we wrote,” says DeVita. “We just wanted a straight to the point, minimal chords, simple lyrics and no BS. James [Gatling – WAAX guitarist and co-songwriter] and I wrote it in one session very quickly. I felt during that time that no matter what I tried my life was not changing, the same patterns were emerging, and I felt frustrated. I always had this feeling of hitting my head on the ceiling trying to get the f*ck out.” – Maz Devita

As mentioned, both tracks are taken from the bands forthcoming album, At Least I’m Free which is scheduled for release on August 5th. The new album will see 11 tracks including the bands QMA Award winning number, Most Hated Girl.

To celebrate the release Waax are hitting the road starting next week with the national DANGEROUS TOUR, kicking off at the iconic Corner Hotel in Melbourne on Thursday April 14, before moving it’s way through Vic, QLD, Tas, South Australia and ACT, finishing up back in QLD.

We’re so excited to see Waax back with some instant classic’s and hitting the stage again. If these two singles are anything to go by, we know the full album is going to be nothing short of fucking epic. Dangerous and Help Me Hell are available now, everywhere via our pals at Dew Process.
