EP Review: Sex On Toast ‘Ready’

Sex on Toast Press Shot 2016

10-piece pop-rockers Sex On Toast are back to arouse us once again, this time with their latest EP ‘Ready’. The EP includes the massively successful singles Oh Loretta! and Doubt, as well as three more tracks that’ll keep you craving more.

Having already amassed almost 100,000 plays on Soundcloud, Oh Loretta! begins with the cool, funky electronic keyboard before jumping into a jazzy chorus of Angus Leslie’s deep and mysterious vocals. The entire 10-piece is soon singing along for Loretta to “take off [her] sweater” while Leslie continues to sing that if she were a bus, “she’d be double decker”. While we’re not sure if that’s supposed to be a positive thing, the cascading trumpet fanfare reminiscent of a 80s jazz-funk band makes it sound like a compliment!

“…the real driving force of the track has to be the Louis King’s guitar solo that provides an energy and passion unlike any others on the track.”

Next up, pumping drums and electric guitar introduces Give It To Me, clearly setting the rock scene for the track. The vocals are more exposed in this tune, making a real feature of Leslie’s pitch-perfect, transcendent voice. There’s even a death scream towards the end, just in case you were still unsure Sex On Toast are going for a rock vibe! However, the real driving force of the track has to be the Louis King’s guitar solo that provides an energy and passion unlike any others on the track.

Hold My Love (Part 2) puts a new spin on their old single Hold My Love (part one). It’s a really quirky combination of modern pop and 80s cool jazz, complete with trumpet solo and saxophone blues jam. This fun track is sure to have you grooving, and you’ll probably even try to keep up with Angus Leslie’s killer falsetto. But for your neighbour’s sake, we wouldn’t recommend it!

Up next is the second single of the EP, Doubt, which boasts a real old-school pop-rock vibe. The cheeky keys combined with Johnny Bassoon’s bassoon solo and culmination of all 10 voices make this super energetic track pretty much unforgettable. To top it all off, Sex On Toast recently released the music video for Doubt which is just freaking hilarious. We have no Doubt you’ll love it, check it out below!

Potential Sexy is slower and again mysterious sounding with a jazz feel similar to Oh Loretta!. The relaxed vocals and gentle keys of this track really mesh into a cool combination of jazzy perfection. The 80s-esque trumpet fanfares ties Potential Sexy back to the rest of the EP, all the while still maintaining a unique sound to the song. Oh Loretta! and Potential Sexy provide the perfect bookends for the EP, mirroring each other in their cool, jazzy cheekiness while still boasting that little bit of pop-rock to wrap the EP together nicely.
