West Thebarton Brothel Party Drop Slacker Anthem “Dolewave”

West Thebarton Brothel Party

Adelaide garage rockers West Thebarton Brothel Party have gotten creative with the taxpayer dollar in their new single Dolewave. Accompanying the new track is the announcement of a national tour to get more WTBP into your earholes and eye sockets.

The track features the kind of lo-fi sound that WTBP are known for, with a very jangley guitar line pairing well with almost shouted vocals. The rhythm section are solid, and the bass line and drumming slot in well with the guitar rhythms to drive the track ever-forward like a Centrelink line.

The lyrics, as you might have put together, throw their two cents in on the life of a slacker, with quips about going to receive a dole payment, and the lifestyle that goes with it. Delivered in an anthemic way, lines like “Waking up at quarter past eleven/And standing in a line” and “I’ve got a $20,000 HECS debt” will hit home for a few.

“I’ve lived on the dole before, and its not glamourous, but some people on the outside tend to think that it’s really romantic, carefree and that all artists on the dole do is party all the time, drink all the time and do whatever they want without consequence. This song came from being frustrated by that lifestyle,” said that band’s guitarist and vocalist, Ray Dalfsen.

The band say they are having a stab at some of the “stupid” labels that society place on music and art.

“The main thing I want to say about ‘Dolewave’ is that it’s a song that riffs on how we as a band, and other bands who may sound like us are labelled with something that we don’t really identify with. I feel like the term dole wave is a reductive one that society of critics think is a ‘cool, groovy’ compliment and tends to be used to identify a whole sound and approach to music,” Dalfsen said.

The track makes us wonder when Good Boy and West Thebarton Brothel Party will be getting together to collaborate.

As well as the track, the band will be heading out on their ‘Four More Years’ Tour, getting their music to a live venue (or maybe two) near you!
