When Jack River Talks, We Listen
Pop songstress Jack River a.k.a Holly Rankin has unleashed a fresh single Talk Like That, and she’s got us listening. Like a blend of Gwen Stefani’s vocals with modern, atmospheric instrumentation, the track is sure to please Rankin’s new record label I OH YOU.
The track begins with a glistening syncopated synthesiser melody laid over a steady, boho drum rhythm. Breathy vocals in the first verse build a sense of intrigue, perfect for the evasive, understated lyrics: “Walking in a backstreet, looking for a bite to drink/Have you got that thing that I need?” The chorus takes on a bolder energy driven by a sudden synth build-up and raw vocals, creating a delicate contrast against the verses’ pop sugar.
Rankin said one of the main aims for her new releases is always to be original. “I don’t ever reference what I did in the last song; that would be really boring. In our world right now a lot of things are so homogenised and repetitive that we almost expect things to be repetitive,” she said.
Rankin said she is thrilled to be a part of her new record label, and all signs point to some great new music in the future. “The artists on I OH YOU are making the exact kind of music I love and need – it’s real, gritty, alive and electrifying – there is no other home for Jack River.”
