Why We’re Excited For Koi Child’s Debut Album

Koi Child

Fremantle 7-piece Koi Child are set to unleash their awesome nu-jazz hiphop & psychedelic stylings on the world this month with their self-titled debut album, produced and mixed by Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker.

“If the band’s 1-5-9, Black Panda, and Slow One are anything to go by the debut album will be a gorgeously infused concoction of nu-jazz, hip hop, and sweet lyrical hypnosis.”

Koi Child says their 14-track debut album will deliver, “warm dubby chords, wandering bass lines, crunching drums, and masterful lyricism”. If the band’s 1-5-9, Black Panda, and Slow One are anything to go by the debut album will be a gorgeously infused concoction of nu-jazz, hip hop, and sweet lyrical hypnosis.

Koi Child have released the music video for their latest single 1-5-9 this week, which is named after the intervals in the bassline and the address of the rehearsal studio where the track was written. The video sees the band dancing atop South Island sand dunes outside of Perth, with gorgeous sunset colours as a backdrop.

On the making of the video vocalist Shannon Patterson said, “I could have sworn each band member fell down at least five times each while dancing on the beach sand in [Fremantle]…not to mention the six foot drop behind us. It was a really funny afternoon”.

Patterson said Black Panda was about “the attitude of something as big, rare, and dark as a black panda”, and was influenced by the King of Pop Michael Jackson.

“When I was a kid, Michael Jackson’s Beat It was my favourite video. I guess that has something to do with the idea for Black Panda. We just wanted something bad ass to suit the track so we got all gangsta on a piano.”

Koi Child’s debut single Slow One was our first taste of the group’s unique genre fusion, with seductive jazz sounds mixed with a hip-hop sonnet combining to produce a captivating track full of colour. It was also the first single recorded and mixed by Parker, after he saw the band play at a Fremantle cafe.

Koi Child’s self-titled debut album is set for release Friday 18 March.
