Ali Barter Tells Us All About Her “Girlie Bits” In New Single
Melbourne indie rocker singer Ali Barter has embraced her retro rock style in her new single Girlie Bits. The song features Barter’s own brand of pop, layering her fist-pumping 70s rock anthemic, uplifting 80s synthesiser, and her retro indie-rock sound.
The lyrics speak straight to the issue and join a tradition stretching back to the 70s and 80s of women kicking against the pricks.
Barter reassures that, “Girlie Bits has nothing to do with body parts, it’s about the cage of what we expect of women: girlie guitar parts, girlie singing, hair; this idea of ‘femininity’ and how to fit within it. But women are not some gentle, watered down version of men. We do it out own way. We worked really hard to write good songs and play great gigs- only to have people critique our clothes and the look on our faces, instead of the music.”
Drawing from an expansive range of styles, Ali Barter has been compared to the likes of Cat Power, Land Of Talk, and Warpaint. Girlie Bits moves away from darker tones and brooding melancholy to create a retro rock track. This being said, even with her punk-rock edge the delicate melody of Barter’s vocal remain a focal point of her music.
