Ball Park Music Hit The Spot With Revolutionary Video for “Whipping Boy”

Since their show-stopping Splendour set a few short months ago, Brisbane outfit Ball Park Music have given their latest single Whipping Boy some sweet video treatment, and it’s anything but ordinary. The clip was created by frontman Sam Cromack using Google’s virtual reality painting application Tilt Brush, inadvertently transforming the song into a soundtrack to the future.

Every bit as psychedelic as Ball Park Music’s previous offerings Pariah and Nihilist Party Anthem, Whipping Boy opens to an easy shoegaze guitar melody beneath characteristically relaxed vocal harmonies. A smooth key change leads into a chorus punctuated by heavier drumming and guitar, the perfect accompaniment to any Monday night ritual involving non-committal swaying and head-banging.

The music video is the ideal accompaniment for the song’s dreamy sound, packed with shimmering colours and random images. Trippy, unusual, and unequivocally captivating, it’s a lot like a shiny dance party in space, a result more than worthy of Google’s high-tech input. Frontman Sam Cromack said working on the video with director Jaymis Loveday was like forming “a creative dream team”.

“This clip felt extra arty and innovative for us. I hope some people get the chance to whack on a VR set and walk through the world I drew; it’s really beautiful when it’s to scale and you can walk amongst everything,” said Cromack.
