EP Review: The Comfort ‘Love’

Brisbane duo The Comfort are about to drop their latest EP ‘Love’, showcasing a more refined approach to their hard rock sound compared their previous EP.

Opening with their recent single Everstone, the EP starts off with a powerful track giving us a glimpse of their new, refined sound. Coming out swinging with its pounding drums and incredibly catchy melodic guitar line, Everstone is an attention-grabbing opener which offers hints of the heaviness we have come to love from these guys since recently catching them live. While Everstone is no where near as raw vocally or dark lyrically to their previous EP ‘Ghosts’, there are still little nuances and screams to help get the blood pumping.

Love & Other Drugs has a very similar vibe to Everstone, boasting some very controlled vocals and huge choruses. It’s almost as if The Brave and Our Last Night had a baby, but in a slightly less heavy manner.

One of the standout tracks on the EP is Dysphasia. This slightly slower, more emotive track really emphasises The Comfort’s new leaf approach to their songwriting. The beautifully delayed guitars together with the vocal harmonies, creating a sense of intense emotion. Passion steadily builds thanks to the melodic guitars before the chorus explodes, “My stomach aches and I can’t sleep/I’ll see you soon, just one more week”. This song clearly portrays the EP’s theme of intense love and yearning for one’s significant other.

Your Heart is the most recently released single from the duo and again focuses on the notions of love, intimacy, and the bond between two people. Encompassing lines from an E. E Cummings poem, the track will earn you huge points with your partner with incredibly romantic lyrics while still maintaining a slightly heavy chorus to emphasis the emotion behind the lyrics. “I carry your heart with me (I carry it in my heart)”, exclaims bassist and vocalist Dom Harper. Featuring a nicely stripped-back bridge with gorgeous guitar tones, the separate sections of the song work nicely together to showcase various aspects of the band’s musicianship.

While fans of their heavier tracks may be a bit surprised and divided, there’s still something for everyone to ‘Love’…

Forgive. Accept. Love is another mellow track but deals with slightly darker themes prominent in the lyrics, “What went on in your head that night?/When you decided to say goodbye?/Did the demons take charge?”.  Another stellar example of beautiful instrumentation, this track transcends to a more melodic chorus and even features a tasteful little guitar solo to suit this highly emotive track.

Wrapping up the EP is Deprime. Again kicking off a very stripped-back guitar and vocal combo, the drums cut in to an ethereal instrumental section. This song really embraces the ‘less is more’ approach for the most part before slapping you in the face with a massive rocking chorus.

Overall, The Comfort have delivered a very polished and mature EP with excellent production. While fans of their heavier tracks may be a bit surprised and divided, there’s still something for everyone to ‘Love’.
