Illy & Vera Blue Team Up in Slow Burner “Papercuts”

Melbourne rapper Illy and Sydney songstress Vera Blue have put their heads together for new collab Papercuts, the first cut off Illy’s forthcoming fifth studio album.

The slow burner takes some notes from international contemporary artists like Drake and ZAYN in the instrumentation. The song feels reflective on past experiences, with Illy taking to Facebook saying he’s held onto this song for a long time.

Papercuts sees Illy trade guitars for synthesisers as the rapper takes some inspiration from fellow Aussie producer Flume. So far Papercuts has seen mixed reviews, with fans either side of the fence. Some people are praising the Melbourne rapper, and others describe his new track as “t-paining too much”.

Illy approaches the vocals as a singer rather that a rapper, flowing into Vera Blue’s stunning voice that rises above the instrumentation. Blue’s vocal work showcases her own pop vibe that she’s known for since placing third on The Voice in 2013.

Papercuts takes a far more electronic angle compared to his guitar driven previous track Swear Jar, which came in at #39 on triple j’s 2015 Hottest 100 and features lyrics that’ll make your grandma faint. Illy has cleaned up his lyrics on this track with minimalistic production to create a song that you’d be happy to play in the car with your mum.

Those lucky enough to get a ticket to Splendour In The Grass can catch Illy on Friday night, so no doubt there’ll be some hot fire spat. You’ll can also catch Vera Blue at a venue near you from August to October as part of her national tour.
