Taku And Wafia “Leave” Us Wanting More For triple j’s Like A Version

Jojo’s 2004 hit Leave (Get Out) packs plenty of RnB charm, but Taku and Wafia may have just taken it to another level for triple j’s latest Like A Version, reminding us all how well they work together.

A slick piano melody over a soft, steady beat makes for an intriguing jazz-tinged opening, leading into Taku’s smooth, tender vocals. His mid range shines amongst complex vocal harmonies to form that classic RnB sound, while the second verse belongs to Wafia.

The lyrics sound just right in the Wafia’s mellow, subtly emotive tone. Her voice is perfect for early 2000s RnB, pulling off the vocal runs with delicacy and charm and offering a subtle alternative to Jojo’s pop sensibility. The chorus is a highlight as Taku and Wafia come together, bringing out thicker harmonies in meticulous timing.

Since working together on their ‘(m)edian’ EP, Taku and Wafia said they have formed a close, sibling-like relationship, and it shows through their synchronicity and effortless blend – it’s a cover well done, and a much-needed blast from the past for any RnB fan.
