Merpire Is Coherently Resolute On ‘Lately’

Merpire

Merpire—also known Rhiannon Atkinson-Howatt to her friends—is a captivating and stirring songstress from Melbourne. Lately is the artist’s latest and makes us, yet again, fall head over heels for her.

Short, sweet and coherently to the point, Merpire stands her ground and executes a dire sense of longing in just under three minutes. Her songwriting finesse and ability to craft a tale has continued to develop through her career. Now, Merpire finds total introspection through her lovelorn indie-rock.

Produced by James Seymour (aka FEELDS), the song comes to life with her efferverscnet voice and stark guitar playing. The video, brought to life by Nick McKk, shows Merpire rollerskating around her neighbourhood after a shopping trip for household goods.

“I thought teaching myself to roller-skate for the video would be a great representation for the meaning of the song – moving on, unsteady on my feet but going at it full pelt anyway,” explains Merpire.

2018 was completely career-defining for the Melbourne songstress. With shows beyond shows, including an appearance at BIGSOUND (where we named her one of our highlights), as well as the release of her ‘Endless Chatter’ EP, which spawned the amazing Invitation, Merpire quickly became a household name. Not to mention she got tacked onto support slots for Angie McMahon, Didirri, Olympia, Phantastic Ferniture and Oh Pep!.

Through March and April, Merpire will be appearing at a couple of festivals around the country. Stream Lately below.
