The Absolute Top 10 Guns N’ Roses Songs

Guns image

In lieu of the huge announcement by Guns N’ Roses of an Australian tour early next year, we decided to pick our Top 10 favourite Gunners numbers… so without further adeu, here they are!

10. Welcome To The Jungle

As the opening track of the legendary ‘Appetite For Destruction’ album, this was many people’s introduction to Guns N’ Roses, and boy what an introduction it was! We can clearly remember this song almost blowing our heads off the first time we listened to it. A perfect mix of grit, dirt, and rock n’ roll, Welcome To The Jungle just about sums up everything the Gunners stood for.

9. It’s So Easy

Another hard rocking classic (and the track that follows Jungle), It’s So Easy gives us more of the themes in gunners music we all love; chaos, debauchery, and a “F*ck you!” attitude that becomes infectious. Not to mention the rollicking instrumentals, such as a neat bass intro, that oozes cool to make this track awesome.

8. Used To Love Her

One of the best things about Gunners is they don’t take themselves too seriously, and this song is shining evidence of that, “I had to put her, Six feet under, and I can still hear her complain”. You have to give them credit, whether it’s electric or acoustic, the Guns rock in any setting, and Used To Love Her has a groove that’s impossible not to dance to.

7. Dead Horse

A bit of a sad intro is followed by a contrasting upbeat rock number. There’s not much to say about this one other than it’s one of the best off of ‘Use Your Illusion I’. New drummer Matt Sorum drives well on this one, and the band shows once again that they’re an endless well of great songs.

6. Yesterdays

They may have been the most dangerous band in the world, but at the same time Guns n’ Roses showed us they had a sensitive side. Lifted from ‘Use Your Illusion II’, which is in our opinion the best Gunners album, Yesterdays takes a break from the tales of decadence to sing about regret and the past. The inclusion of piano and a bit less distortion on this album was greatly appreciated, and this song shows the band at close to their creative best.

5. Mr. Brownstone

Axl warns of the perils of hard drug use on Mr. Brownstone, with a title and lyrics that don’t hold back. Lyrics that would become a theme for the band gives the listener an insight into another part of the dark world of a rock ‘n’ roll band living on the streets, “I used to do a little but a little wouldn’t do so a little got more and more, I just keep trying to get a little better, a little better than before”. Drug use, namely heroin, would in different ways cause the departure of two of the band’s members. The song is great regardless, with one of the coolest guitar intros around.

4. November Rain

What can you say about November Rain that hasn’t already been said? A ballad that will surely stand the test of time, November Rain is certainly one of the Magnum Opus’ of the band. Backed by an orchestra, November Rain is a soft, sentimental song that will make you feel a bit better if you’re sad. As one of the band’s longest ever songs, it features one of the best guitar solos ever… the catch is you have to wait a long time for it to start.

3. Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door

It’s not often you hear a cover that’s better than the original, but Guns n’ Roses version of Bob Dylan’s original knocks the song out of the park. You’ll have to listen to it for yourself and make your own judgement, but this is sure to be one of the lasting legacy numbers from the band.

2. Paradise City

You’d be hard-pressed to find someone that didn’t recognize the blissful guitar intro to Paradise City, or at least the chorus. Slash himself has often stated this is his favourite song to play live, and it’s not hard to see why as this song is the perfect set closer (as we’re about to find out 😉 ). What more can be said, an amazing song that will be playing over loudspeakers for years to come.

1. Chinese Democracy

The ‘Chinese Democracy’ album may have got a lot of flak, but it’s hard to say anything bad about this number. Combining killer guitars, vocals, and a driving groove, this song has everything a Guns n’ Roses fan could want. Without doubt the greatest song they’ve recorded………………………

1. Estranged

Okay, that last one was a joke, sorry if you’d just started writing a big angry paragraph at us. The real #1 may come as a surprise to many, but it’s top dog for a reason. Estranged may not be the most well known Gunners song, but it’s surely their greatest. Everything about Estranged is perfect; multiple key changes, the ebb and flow of tension and emotion, and every band member adding their unique part to the makeup of this lengthy song couldn’t have been done better. There’s not just one shining element to the track, but still the soulful piano playing brings tears to the eyes. Perhaps as time goes by, Estranged will become more recognised, but for now we’re just happy it exists.
