Memes Everywhere as Sum 41 Destroy All Expectations in “Fake My Own Death”
2016 is shaping up to be one hell of a turbulent year for pop punk. In-between new releases from Simple Plan, Blink-182, and A Day To Remember, Canadian rockers Sum 41 are throwing their hat into the ring with the announcement of release of their sixth album ’13 Voices’.
Lead single from the new album Fake My Own Death is an uptempo punk track, featuring the band’s signature shredding guitars and a soaring singalong chorus. The pounding drums and booming production lend an almost arena-rock feel, with Fake My Own Death sounding tailor-made for radio airplay
Fake My Own Death is somewhat a tribute to the band’s metal-influence era of the mid-2000s, and sounds like it could’ve easily fit in on ‘Chuck’ or ‘Does This Look Infected?’, while also exemplifying the type of accessible pop punk Sum 41 built their name on.
Vocalist Deryck Whibley hasn’t lost any wild energy in the band’s 20 year career. Similarly, the return of former guitarist Dave Baksh lends the song a sense of urgency not heard since Fat Lip first rocked our world 15 years ago.
The music video features the band being terrorised by various dated internet memes while performing on a rooftop in downtown Los Angeles. 9Gag users are sure to feel massive amounts of enjoyment upon viewing!!
